# 0 Squared

0 squared, 02, is the number you get when multiplying 0 times 0. It can also be looked at as exponentiation involving the base 0 and the exponent 2. The term is usually pronounced zero times zero or zero squared. The square of 0 is a perfect square because the number is the product of the two equal integers 0. It can be written as 0 x 0 or in exponential form. Read on to learn everything about the number zero squared, including the useful identities.

02 = 0
0 x 0 = 0

The inverse operation of squaring zero is extracting the square root of 0, explained here. In the next section we elaborate on what is 0 squared, and there you can also find our calculator.

## What is 0 Squared

A square is a flat shape with four equal sides; every angle is 90°. Hence, a square with side length 0 has an area of 0.

0 squared equals the sum of the first 0 odd numbers:

$\sum_{i=1}^{0} (2i-1)$ = 0

In addition, the number can be calculated from -1 squared using the following identity:

n2 = (n − 1)2 + (n − 1) + n = (n − 1)2 + (2n − 1)
02 = -12 + -1 + 0 = -12 + -1 = 0

It can be also be computed from -1 squared with this identity:

n2 = 2 x (n − 1)2 − (n − 2)2 + 2
02 = 2 x -12 – -22 + 2 = 2 x 1 – 4 + 2 = 0

The difference between the perfect square of 0 and its predecessor, -1, can be calculated with the identity n2 − (n − 1)2 = 2n − 1:

2 x 0 – 1 = -1 = 02 – -12 = 0 – 1 = -1

0 is even, and the square numbers of even numbers are also even: (2n)2 = 4n2.

Squares of even numbers like 0 are divisible by 4 for $\frac{(2n)^{2}}{4}$ = n2.
